South Texas College’s Technology Campus Library presents “The Girl by the Sea: Enchanted Storytelling in the Digital Age,” an exhibit featuring the writing and digital illustrations of Robert Gilbert. The exhibit opens Thursday, Feb. 2 and will be on view through Friday, May 11, 2012 at the Technology Campus Library located at 3700 W. Military Hwy. in McAllen. Admission is free and open to the public.

Gilbert embarked on creating a children’s book made solely with his mind and his computer entitled, “The Girl by the Sea.” The work reveals a playful, colorful world, with simple, yet bold imagery, where the main character lives with nature and enjoys a freedom that is untainted.

“Children and adults alike will relate to the intriguing narrative, as well as to the harmonious flow of the book,” said Dawn Haughey, STC Art Gallery associate. “The casual approach to the display of this work, that is artwork clipped to the walls instead of being in traditional frames, also uniquely mimics the way that it was written, bringing a satisfactory cohesion to the exhibit.”

Gilbert is an assistant professor at The University of Texas-Pan American. He graduated from the Otis Parson’s Art Institute in Los Angeles and earned his master’s degree from California State University. He also spent four years teaching graphic design in Athens, Greece. His work employs the concept of a personal mythology, a visual language that tells ones story. Gilbert also often uses an everyday, common object as an icon in his stories. He sees a personal icon as something that is hard and protective, and that keeps people safe from the elements, the raw flux and flow of life.

South Texas College’s Library Art Gallery Program exhibits regional, national and international artwork, explores new visions and theories of creativity, and introduces innovative artistic expressions to the South Texas region.
